Maun International Airport(FBMN) is located within Maun Town boundaries, in the North West District, and is about one and half hours flight from Gaborone and two hour from Johannesburg. The airport is open to both domestic and international traffic, and mainly serves as the gateway for tourists visiting the world famous Okavango Delta.

Maun International Airport is the second busiest airport in Botswana in terms of passenger traffic from Sir Seretse Khama International Airport and the base for tourist activities in the Okavango area and other parts of North West District. In terms of aircraft movements (majority of which are short-hop flights to and from airfields in the Delta) Maun International Airport is ranked top airport in Africa, i.e. excluding the number-one-ranked OR Tambo International, of South Africa. The airport functions as a hub for small single and twin-engine aircraft feeding mainline carriers.

Air Services, Maun International Airport

Civil Aviation Authority of Botswana (CAAB) has embarked on a Terminal Renovation project at Maun International Airport. The development of the terminal building began in April 2019 but was delayed by 3 months due to COVID-19 outbreak. The original scope of work was set to be completed by the end of November 2020, and the entrance lobby will be completed in March 2021.

The renovations made so far include the following.

  • The expansion of the public concourse area departure hall
  • Expansion of international and domestic baggage area.
  • New check-in counters,
  • New flight information display
  • New P.A System
  • New toilets
  • New baggage belts
  • New paved parking spaces were added.

Maun International Airport is one of the busiest Airports in Southern African region. Most of the air traffic into and out of Maun consists of light aircraft which fly in from the Okavango Delta. On average, six-light aircraft are generated at Maun from the arrival of every scheduled aircraft at the airport.

OTHER INFORMATION

The airport currently operate normal hours from 0730hrs to 1630hrs because of reduced aircraft movement due to the COVID19 outbreak.  The airport is adhering to the COVID19 protocols in order to safely accommodate domestic aircraft traffic. Procedures are also in place for handling international traffic which has been approved by the health Authorities to operate at the Maun International Airport.

Passengers Information

  • Security measures are taken to inspect persons and property being brought into  restricted areas of airports and on all departing passengers, baggage and cargo.
  • Refusal to submit to inspection will result in prohibition to enter an airport  restricted area or to board an aircraft.
  • There is an international restriction on the carriage of Liquids, Aerosol and  Gels (LAGs) on board aircraft.  Passengers are allowed to carry a total of 100 ml  in a Security Temper Prove Bags (LAGs) in their carry-on baggage.
  • A passenger who has taken excess alcohol will not be allowed access into any airport restricted areas or board the aircraft.

Access to the airport is not allowed during night or off hours.

Persons making inappropriate comments concerning hijacking, carriage of weapons,  explosives or any statement that may jeopardize public safety and security, at  airports, may be prosecuted.
