Overview

Air Navigation Services is responsible for the country’s airspace or the Gaborone Flight Information Region (FIR) as it is known by the aviation community. This airspace is from ground level to infinity and it includes portions of the Namibian airspace over the Caprivi – Strip from Flight level 145 (14500 feet above mean sea level) to infinity.

Air Traffic Services (ATS)

key functions of ATS Unit: To manage the airspace over the territory of Botswana and the delegated airspace over the Caprivi-Strip in Namibia, which includes:

  • Control all traffic operating within Botswana and delegated airspaces;
  •  Safe, economical and orderly flow of air traffic within Gaborone Flight Information Region;
  • Manage air traffic services facilities;
  • Oversee air traffic services in Botswana; and
  • Conduct internal investigation of ATS occurrences and develop avoidance action to mitigate recurrences.
Communications, Navigation Services (CNS)
  • The supply, installation and maintenance of all CNS Systems in Botswana;
  • Ensure the reliability and availability of all CNS facilities for provision of ATS and AIS services at airports and in the Botswana air space.
  • Prepare project profiles and technical specifications for all ANS required facilities, Aviation System Upgrade Block (ASBU) as per ICAO requirement.
  • Install, test and commission newly purchased ANS facilities.
  • Study operational aspects of all ANS Equipment and determine the Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF) as well as Mean Time To Repair (MTTR).
  • Inspect, monitor and control the reliability and availability of ANS facilities.
  • Ensure availability of spare parts for all ANS equipment to improve availability and efficiency of ANS facilities.
  • Provide technical trainings for CNS maintenance personnel on Communication and Navigation facilities.
  • Conduct routine and preventive maintenance of all ANS Equipment.
  • Maintenance of all Air Traffic Services (ATS) Communication, Navigation and surveillance Systems.
  • Flight checks and calibrate all Navigation-Aids, landing Aids and Instrument Approach Procedures.
  • Ensures all the services comply with the standards and recommended practices (SARPS) of ICAO annex. 10.
Aeronautical Information Services (AIS)

The Role of AIS is to ensure the timely flow of Aeronautical Information necessary for the Safety, Regularity and Efficiency of National/International Air Navigation. AIS collects, collates, assembles, edits, formats, originates, publishes and distributes Aeronautical Information/ Data necessary for Safety, Regularity and Efficiency of Air Navigation concerning the entire Gaborone Flight Information Region (FIR).
