Private Licensed Aerodromes
Private aerodromes are licensed by the Civil Aviation Authority of Botswana (CAAB) on annual basis to ensure compliance with certain minimum standards. The private aerodromes are licensed under category ‘A’, ‘B’, ‘C’, or ‘D’ as follows:
License Category ‘A’: Aerodromes intended for handling aircraft operations involving the public transport of passengers, mail or cargo including aircraft exceeding maximum weight authorized of 5,700 kg.
License Category ‘B’: Aerodromes intended for handling aircraft operations involving the public transport of passengers, mail or cargo utilizing aircraft not exceeding maximum weight authorized of 5,700 kg.
License Category ‘C’: Aerodromes intended for handling aircraft operations involving the public transport of passengers, mail or cargo utilizing aircraft not exceeding maximum weight authorized of 3,500 kg.
License Category ‘D’: Aerodromes intended for private use utilizing aircraft not exceeding maximum weight authorized of 5,700 kg.
These aerodromes are licensed on annual basis. The period of validity of the license is promulgated by ‘NOTAM’ Notice-to-Airmen. Many of these aerodromes are situated in remote regions; therefore, up to-date information regarding the serviceability of the aerodromes is not always available.
Some of these aerodromes may be abandoned in the rainy season- November to April approximately. These aerodromes can only be used by the prior permission of the owner, from whom full details of the aerodrome license validity and its serviceability can be obtained.
Pilots must over-fly and inspect these aerodromes thoroughly before landing since most of these aerodromes are not fenced. Pilots, after takeoff from any of these aerodromes, must broadcast their intentions so that other traffic in the vicinity would be aware of their position.
These aerodromes are not available for aircraft takeoff and landing during the night and in instrument meteorological conditions (IMC) except where specifically permitted.
These aerodromes are listed in the Botswana Aeronautical Information Publication (AIP) document, contact address:
